Afternoon Workshop 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges young people face from living life in the closet to being tentatively out to being out and proud. In addition to personal stories, dig deeper into topics such as heterosexual privilege, cisgender privilege, presumed heterosexuality as well as micro-aggressions versus micro-affirmations and the important role of allies.

Kathy Hermes is the Program Coordinator for Lutheran Social Service’s Together for Youth, a social support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and allied youth in Duluth, MN. Additionally, Kathy hosts a support group for friends and family members of transgender and gender non‐conforming people. She also serves runaway and homeless youth as the Duluth area Outreach Educator for National Safe Place. In collaboration with a free teen clinic and street outreach team, Kathy conducts HIV testing outreach work focused on street involved teens and young adults. She has also served as a staff member at Lutheran Social Service’s Renaissance House, a transitional housing facility for homeless youth.
