Minneapolis CARES

In 2009, a group of youth-serving organizations from Minneapolis came together to form the 54th U.S. chapter of the National CARES Mentoring Movement (NCMM).  NCMM was created by Susan Taylor, former editor of Essence Magazine, and it has met support from celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Spike Lee.

The mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Corey Booker shares his thoughts on mentoring.

The mission of Minneapolis CARES is to mobilize 1000 caring and committed Black adults to fill the pipeline of existing local mentoring organizations to better serve children in need of support.

Our method is to recruit volunteers through the combined efforts of local mentoring programs, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities, Bolder Options, and Kinship of Greater Minneapolis; funders; and other youth mentoring organizations such as the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota (MPM) and MADDADS.
