Training Quality Mentors

Standard 3 from the new Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring™, third edition lists seven topics that mentoring training must, at a minimum, include:
    1. Program rules;
    2. Mentors’ goals and expectations for the mentor/mentee relationship;
    3. Mentors’ obligations and appropriate roles;
    4. Relationship development and maintenance;
    5. Ethical issues that may arise related to the mentoring relationship;
    6. Effective closure of the mentoring relationship; and
    7. Sources of assistance available to support mentors.
MPM's Training Quality Mentors workshop helps participants meet the benchmarks for Standard 3 by demonstrating and sharing creative and efficient ways to deliver the required topics in a pre-match, in-person training.  This workshop guides participants to design a mentor training that will enforce organizational and program values, minimize risk and teach the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for potential mentors to develop longer, stronger relationships.  Participants have the opportunity to practice delivering training to each other and leave with new strategies for facilitating quality mentor training.

This is an interactive workshop that provides guidance on key concepts to include in mentor training, equips participants with strategies for training adult volunteers, and helps program staff gain confidence in their ability to facilitate an effective mentor training session. Both new and veteran staff will enjoy gathering and sharing creative mentor training ideas in this engaging and fun workshop!  All participants receive links to other resources that include suggested agendas, trainer tips & scripts, and instructions for activities to use during mentor training.
