May 16 - Exploring the Role of Risk in Youth Mentoring

One of the most challenging aspects of designing and delivering mentoring services is determining who will benefit most from particular program practices or relationship approaches. In a time of scarce resources and limited volunteer availability, it is important that mentoring programs provide the greatest impact to as many youth as possible. But programs today are often being asked to serve increasingly higher-risk youth and demonstrate a strong impact on difficult social problems. To meet this challenge, practitioners need better information about how youth with varying levels and types of risk might benefit from what they have to offer and what practices might enhance the length and strength of their mentoring relationships.

Thankfully, there is a major new research report that discusses exactly this. The Role of Risk: Mentoring Experiences and Outcomes for Youth with Varying Risk Profiles details the results of a recently-completed study that examined the environmental and individual risk of youth in mentoring programs, as well as the strategies and supports that shaped their experience in the program. This study provides valuable information on the associations between youths’ level of risk and participant outcomes, as well as between specific program practices and match length and strength. This is a major addition to what we know about serving different kinds of youth in mentoring programs.

Please join us as we discuss the findings of The Role of Risk with researchers Carla Herrera and David DuBois and Washington State Mentors’ Janet Heubach, who facilitated the implementation of the project. We hope this event will provide key insights into effectively working with youth across the spectrum of risk.

In our March 2013 webinar, we introduced the new Handbook of Youth Mentoring, 2nd Edition. Throughout the year, several webinars will look in-depth at specific chapters in the Handbook, while will continue to cover other pertinent topics in mentoring research and practice this year!
