January 2012 marks the 11th anniversary of National Mentoring Month, an annual media campaign to recruit volunteer mentors for young people. This year’s campaign slogan, “Invest in the Future, Mentor a Child,” focuses on mentoring as a strategy for boosting academic achievement and workforce readiness. In Minnesota, more than 270,000 young people could benefit from a mentoring relationship.

Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration Awards Annual Excellence Awards to Polly Roach
Maplewood, MN— the Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration will award its annual excellence awards at the MAVA Annual Business Meeting on November 3, 2011 to outstanding volunteers and leaders of volunteers. The MAVA Mary Wiser Award for Leadership in the Field of Volunteer Resources is awarded to Polly Roach, Vice President of Strategic Services at the Mentoring Partnership of MN.

Dr. Renée Spencer, Associate Professor at Boston University School of Social Work, and Dr. Jean Rhodes, Professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, headline the 12th annual Minnesota Mentoring Conference: “Best in Class” hosted by the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota (MPM). The conference will be held at the University of Minnesota's Continuing Education & Conference Center in Saint Paul. The researchers will discuss the quality of mentoring relationships and shed light on two provocative questions: "Doing Our Best: Is It Good Enough?" and "Which Youth Is Mentoring Best For?"

Apply or nominate someone to be on MPM's Program Services Council, a new advisory group that will provide guidance for MPM's quality initiative, Training Institute and other services. By serving on the council you will assist MPM in building and sustaining quality mentoring for Minnesota. You will have the opportunity to network with and learn from other mentoring programs across the state. You will also provide a voice for your geographic area and for the type of mentoring services you offer.

Spearheaded by the Harvard Mentoring Project of the Harvard School of Public Health, MENTOR, and the Corporation for National and Community Service, this year’s campaign focuses on mentoring as a strategy for boosting academic achievement. The campaign’s tagline is “Help Them Get There. Become a Mentor.” President Obama has issued an official proclamation for the occasion.

From Oct. 15 to Oct. 22, all donations made through the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota (MPM) will go to mentoring programs that commit to striving for the highest level of quality best practices, in turn ensuring more positive outcomes for youth. This campaign, called “Strive for Five: Give Mentoring a Hand,” will also be matched dollar for dollar by M.A. Mortenson and The Anderson Family Foundation with a generous contribution of up to $20,000 to support MPM’s quality initiative.

Kids and adults, side by side, singing from the heart—that’s the core of the Minnesota Chorale’s 2009 Bridges concert, “Sing with Me,” which celebrates the mentoring relationships that have blossomed between the Minneapolis Youth Chorus (MYC) and adult singers in the Chorale. This upbeat, family-friendly event will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 215 South 8th Street, in downtown Minneapolis.
